Dear Dad”

Written by Psalmer Joy Richmond

These are my words that should have

Been spoken while you were still here,

But I kept saying “One day soon, I will.”

That day will never come

Just hope that you can still hear.

So I’ll close my eyes and talk it through,

Even though this audience is here looking at me,

It’s really just me and you.

You have put a smile on my face,

Seeing how you took care of all of us.

As far as I can remember none of us lack for anything,

We always had enough.

Your stern hand on our backs

Was to give us pressure in the right direction

I’m just now realizing that.

I always thought of your fussing

As you being mad at me,

When in actuality you were instructing me.

For what is a father who does not give direction

To his children who may not always see?

Even though the “I love you’s” and hugs

Were not as often as I thought

They needed to be,

Somewhere inside of me I knew you felt it,

But I just wanted it to be you first, then me.

Don’t want to waste any more time.

I love you Dad.

I truly appreciate,

I cherish, adore, honor you this day

Can you see the sincerity on my face?

I want you to feel all this love at this moment,

For it will never get truer than this

My pure admiration I release it.

I pour it over my thoughts of you,

I am me, because you were you.

I hope I make you proud,

Put a smile on your face

In what I do.

Did you hear me?

Dad, did you hear these words?

I know that these words

Couldn’t be humanly-kept,

But I hope they were spiritually-felt,

Reaching your soul’s depth,

Now bodily-slept.

My mind is saying to me that

I can’t live without you,

But you always say “Can’t does not exist”

Oh how I wish that

It wasn’t you that I achingly miss.

I don’t want to end this letter,

Because I still have more than I thought.

Every emotion I tried to put to naught,

I want to say it all with no pause.

But it must end,

Never our love for you, Dad.

No, not that!

We will continue on in every tear, every laugh,

Realizing you were the best we had.

So rest now Dad.

Yes, it’s time to rest,

Now heavenly-kept
